There is no reason to believe that those realities will change or that the role of the nurse in the delivery of care will become less complex. There are core issues that confront all nurses whatever their specific field of practice. Health care should be safe, personalized and effective. Nurses should demonstrate the skills, values and knowledge to provide skilful, intelligent and compassionate care wherever they work. These issues are reflected in the four domains of the NMC competency framework that sets out the standards for competence, and the individual competencies, to be successfully achieved for registration as a nurse.

Statistics appear to be convincing but should not be treated as facts. It is important to explore how statistical figures were arrived at and examine the reliability and validity of the data in question. The following questions could be asked: What was the sample size? How representative is the sample of the population? Are there any methodological weaknesses in how data was collected? Using different types of evidence to answer practice questions Statistics derived from surveys and other quantitative studies only represent part of the clinical practice scenario.
